“Sivu, c’mon. Hey. Hey!” Cole sighed as he tugged the grey tokota back onto the narrow dirt path, away from the plethora of scents and sights of the forest around them. Luckily they were quickly approaching the spot where the path opened up to the vast tundra, where he was hoping it would be easier to control Sivu. She was being very hyper today, more than usual, and Cole was running out of tricks to keep her attention focused.

Ahead of Cole and Sivu, Laura and Leanna were chatting happily atop their tokotas, Seneca and Djinn. Both tokotas seemed content to trot along comfortably before they got started with the hunt. Luke and Yutalie were taking the lead, and Luke glanced back every now and then to make sure everyone was still following. As Cole glanced up, trying to keep Sivu on the path, Laura glanced back and smiled. Her hair caught the sunlight and was blown gently by the autumn breeze before she turned back to Lee, laughing. Cole felt his heart flutter a little before Sivu took a sharp turn to the side and nearly threw him from the saddle.

Laura breathed in deeply as they stepped out of the forest and onto the vast tundra. A valley riddled with small hills laid before them and Seneca sped up a little, sensing the freedom of the place. Lee and Laura had been discussing everything from past hunts to new plans for their tokotas, but now it turned to the hunt ahead of them. “So,” Laura started, pulling Seneca back into a more comfortable pace “I was thinking we could spread out a little, in one long line to cover more ground. We could push our way out into the valley until we either decide to camp for the night or have enough caribou to go home. We can work out the rest once we find the herd, but I think we should try cutting single animals away from the herd, kinda like wolves. What do you think?”

{Layla}

“Sounds like a solid plan to me.” Lee said shooting a sidelong look to her brother. “What do you think Luke, want to do that?”

Luke was about to reply when a shrieking yowl interrupted him and everyone jerked around to spot a black streak strutting towards them. “Pilot! Where the hell did you come from?!” Lee growled as Djinn trotted up to meet his cat.

Bright green eyes scowled up at her from the ground, the tough looking feline dragging something in his mouth. Brow furrowing Lee stared trying to figure out what the hell it was when he unexpectedly jumped in front of her in the saddle bringing his prize with him. Eyes widening Leanna choked out a screech and nearly fell off Djinn when she realized the black cat had killed a snake and was now toting the thing with him and having it draped in her lap, the sadistic bastard. Taking a strained breath she glared at the no doubt smirking feline and it took everything in her not to kill the evil sucker. “You are beyond lucky Djinn adores you…” She snarled flicking the dead reptile off of her.

The spiteful creature meet her gaze and meow-yowled and jumped back down to the ground leaving the dead snake with Lee. Shuddering in revulsion she removed the offending creature and met the laughing eyes of her sibling, whose shoulders were shaking so hard that if she didn’t know better would have thought he was having a seizure. “Yeah, yeah, laugh it up, but I seem to remember a half dead squirrel he dropped in your boxer shorts one morning last month.”  That shut him up.

Shifting in the saddle so that she was leaning off to the side Djinn twisted his head around to see what his handler was doing. “You couldn’t just come home with a old fishing pole or deer skulls, no, you just had to find and bring home that satanic little shit.” Ice blue orbs blinked at her with quiet intelligence and a chuffing pant was all she got in reply.

Lee sighed and straightened in the saddle a string of muttered curses falling from her mouth, Luke and Yutalie stood back watching the whole ordeal. The golden tundra observed the behavior with a quiet amusement, though it wasn’t long before she turned her attention to the expanse of tundra and scented the air looking for traces of the herbivores on the breeze. “To answer your question, yes I like that idea. Do you want Yue and I to take point?” Yutalie flicked an ear in the direction of her handlers voice, but she was more interested in the faint wisps of musk coming in from the valley.

{Scorpio}

Laura quickly smothered her quiet laughter as Luke turned back to her. “That would be great, Luke. I think-” She was cut off by the grey blur racing past her, Seneca snarling and snapping in irritation at being touched. The group watched as Sivu jumped around until Cole was finally shaken loose from the saddle and landed with a thud on his back. He stayed down for a minute, groaning a little, as Sivu trotted back towards Laura and Seneca. Well, until Seneca had had enough of the younger tokota and lunged at her in warning. Somehow Sivu was unfazed and trotted up to Lee, tail wagging and chuffing happily. Laura and Lee laughed as Cole finally got back on his feet and ran over to snatch up Sivu’s reins.

“You guys go ahead,” Cole said a little irritated. “I’ll try to get Sivu to calm down before we find the herd.” Suddenly Sivu jumped at Cole and used the whole length of her tongue to lick his cheek before barking in his ear. He sighed with saliva dripping down his face as Sivu panted next to him.

Laura laughed again before turning Seneca around back towards Lee and Luke. “We’re ready when you guys are!” Luke smiled and gave a quick nod before urging Yutalie forward with Lee and Djinn hot on his heels. Laura hung back for a minute as Cole mounted Sivu and slowly pushed her forward before leading Seneca so they could ride side-by-side before starting the hunt. “Are you doing alright, Cole? And what about Sivu?” Upon hearing her name, Sivu’s head shot up and she nearly ran into Seneca again, but Cole placed a hand on her neck and she immediately knew she had done wrong. The tokota let out a pitiful whine before hanging her head. “I think she’s ok now,” Cole said with a sigh. “Ever since she reached average status she’s been a little wild. I’ve had to stay up late with her to give her more training, so I haven’t got much sleep lately. But I’m fine Laura, don’t worry.”

Laura smiled and patted Cole on the shoulders as if to say it was alright. Then she pushed him and said “Come on, slow poke. Luke and Lee are going to start worrying. I’ll race you!” She stuck her tongue out at him before kicking Seneca forward, the tokota barking happily at the opportunity to stretch out her limbs. Cole shook his head, laughing, before patting Sivu on the neck and urging her forward to catch up.

{Layla}

Luke looked back to see Laura and Cole racing towards them big grins on their faces, and if Luke wasn’t mistaken there was a look of infatuation in Cole’s eyes. He wasn’t surprised really, Laura was a pretty girl and she had a good relationship with tokos. Which for him and guys like him it was a bonus, one that was always snatched up at the quickest opportunity. Yutalie having heard their quick approach picked up her pace into an extended trot almost a lope but not quite. Djinn yipped and became playful when he spotted the half mane and grey tawny racing. Wanting to join in he and Lee hung back on purpose to spring into motion as they got close. Yutalie felt something bolt through her paws and the streak of black fur told both her and Luke that Pilot was living up to his name and leading the band of tokos on the hunt.

The cat could be a pain in the ass most of the time, but he was very resourceful and had lead to more than a few good fishing spots and nooks and crannies to explore on their own property. As everyone caught up they all fell into a more sedate loping canter than the racing pace Seneca and Sivu had had before. They traveled across the open tundra for a little over an hour with few traces of the migratory herbivores. They’d chased after an arctic fox for fun when it tried to go after Pilot but they let it go without too much of a fight, it was more about practicing how they could work together. Djinn was very new to hunting and Lee made him hang back to watch as Seneca and Sivu herded the small predator as Yutalie swung wide and made to ambush the pale fox. He ran at the back making sure the clever little thing didn’t escape but he was more eager to actually go after an animal he could sink his fangs into.

Sensing his impatient attitude Lee leaned low and patted his neck crooning to mellow him but not distract the extended grey as the foursome learned to work as a pack. “I know you want to get out there, don’t you worry you’ll get your chance. Just you wait a little bit longer.”

Djinn grunted but knew there was sense to what she was saying, and did as his handler bid. Pilot had bolted to him the second he realized the fox was after him and had fluffed up like a balloon, his fur was standing on end and his tail looked like a sage brush as he galloped beside his toko. Once they grew tired of teasing the poor fox they let him disappear into a thicket and the group moved on, Yutalie now invigorated with thrill of the chase she was more than ready to track down some caribou. Her blood was pumping and with the adrenalin going the gold tundra couldn’t help but howl her excitement. Luke tried to shush her to keep from spooking any nearby prey but there was no way he could have silenced Sivu, Seneca, and Djinn as they followed her lead. Laura and Cole were both as nervous as Luke since the pack was now alerting everything within a couple mile radius they were there, Lee on the other hand just laughed and threw back her head like she was a toko herself and howled along. Rolling his eyes Luke couldn’t help but chuckle, she was a dork but he wouldn’t trade his crazy sibling for anyone.

{Scorpio}

Cole finally couldn't take it anymore and softly patted Sivu’s shoulder, which quickly silenced the tokota. She clapped her jaws together a few times with her head turned back to him, a sign of annoyance at being quieted. Cole rolled his eyes. The rest of the howls died down soon after Sivu stopped, but Cole and Laura exchanged concerned looks as Seneca began to balk, soon followed by nervous actions of the other tokotas. The handlers realized something was coming.

Soon the handlers also caught on as the ground began to shudder under them. Laura was convinced it was an earthquake, which weren't uncommon in that area, until she saw the first of the caribou crest a hill a little ways ahead of them. Her jaw dropped as the herd started to come into view. Hundreds of caribou were thundering across the tundra right towards them, probably spooked by the howling.

The tokotas became jittery in excitement, the adrenaline filling them and was only being restrained by their handlers. Seneca began to snap her jaws while Sivu and Yutalie barked their enthusiasm and Djinn clawed at the ground. Laura quickly glanced over to Lee, who smiled and nodded to her. Laura figured this meant they could go ahead with their plan, so she quickly turned and explained the plan to work as a pack to Cole. She hoped Lee had filled Luke in on the plan as she urged Seneca forward, leading the charge to meet the herd.

The tokotas soon fanned out to observe the herd better, watching for caribou that would be easy to separate from the herd and take down. Laura tried to relax her grip on the reins and let Seneca do what she needed to, but she was caught up in the hunt too, every bit as involved as her tokota. All she could hear was the caribou hooves and snorting as they tried to flee. She was sure they could at least get one, but with the size of the herd they could get more if they could work quickly and efficiently as a pack. Everyone was tense as they waited for one caribou to falter and give them the chance to cut it off. Ahead of Laura and Seneca, Djinn howled and they knew the opportunity had finally come. Seneca sped up to catch up with Djinn and join the hunt.

{Layla}

Pilot had leaped and clung to Djinn’s saddle once he felt the earth tremble under his paws, evil he may be but he wasn’t stupid. Lee thought of pulling her rifle but decided against it and let her boys instincts take over, the thunderous echo of cloven hooves across the tundra mixed with the loud grunting breaths of the animals drowned out most other sounds. Glacier blues scanned the herd looking for a target but also for his packmates, the grey tundra spotted a flash of golden yellow far ahead of him telling Djinn where Yutalie was with Luke. He didn’t know where Sivu or Seneca had disappeared to, but with a herd this size it wasn’t hard to imagine they were spread thin. Lee tapped her heel against his flank getting his attention, coming back to his immediate surroundings Djinn saw what his handler had sighted. A large bull; his antlers were thick but gnarled in places showing his age, and the stiff way he ran said arthritis. Howling to the others saying he’d found one Djinn made his way through the herd cutting a path to his chosen target.

Seneca soon came up alongside with a bark, her ears pinned in concentration as the tawny and grey tundra paired off to separate the caribou. Lee shot Laura a thumbs up and let Djinn have his head by relaxing the grip on his mane. Growling low in his throat Djinn snapped at the heels of the bull but throwing his head to the side and putting on bursts of speed to the side clearing space so Seneca and Laura could herd the animal through the gaps Djinn made. The landscape changed and went into an incline slowing down the stampede for just enough to break up most of it, the younger faster herbivores surging to the forefront nearly trampling some of their own in the rush to get away from predators. The lowing grunts of the bull driving both tokos into a frenzy, the hunting instinct in them making them forget event the handlers on their backs. Excitement was rampant, the age old dance between hunters and hunted playing a familiar tune with Seneca and Djinn pulling the elder away from the safety of his herd.

Yutalie was moving to a similar song as she and Sivu cut a chunk of the herd into a smaller pack as the one they were after outsmarted them by either outpacing them or stalling and jumping around the toko to rejoin the herd. Snarling in frustration Yue lost her patience and surged ahead determined to bring this animal down, the older female signaled for Sivu to flank and break up the smaller herd as it swerved to converged once more with their fleeing brethren, they would have that damn caribou if it was the last thing she did. Luke was just as annoyed as his Tokota and had debated just like his sister on whether or not he should fire at the creature that had no doubt survived many a hunt if it’s stellar avoidance tactic were to be believed. “C’mon darlin’ we can do it, settle down and figure him out. You’ll get him.” Luke soothed, it was only a whisper, but it was loud enough for the golden tundra to hear and she responded instantly and refocused her efforts.

{Scorpio}

The pack was working hard to separate caribou to where they could single one out and go for the kill. Cole could feel Sivu breathing hard under him as she tried work with Yutalie and constantly watch the other tokota for signs. Once they had come close to being thrown to the ground by an especially lively cow who nearly jumped over them to escape. Cole tried to keep his grip on Sivu relaxed and let her work, but he was going against his instinct by not pulling his knife or gun and helping with the hunt.

Meanwhile, Laura was leaned forward on Seneca so that her chin touched the halfmane’s neck, trying to stay low to distribute her weight and let Seneca work. They were between the main body of the herd and the old bull they were fighting to take down, slowly pushing him away from his kin. Laura couldn't see Lee and Djinn at the moment but knew they were close by and hopefully ready for the kill. Seneca was running hard with the bull and moving towards him, growling and snapping her teeth in his direction to keep him going and wear him down. The old bull was grunting and gasping for air now, his fight to return to the herd becoming weaker with each try. Seneca was quivering with the anticipation of the kill and was having a hard time working with Djinn to put the caribou in a spot where they would be comfortable taking the kill. Finally Laura spotted Lee and Djinn racing behind the caribou, snapping at his heels and starting to bite at the legs. Laura patted Seneca’s neck and said “Ok girl, let's do this,” signaling that it was time to finish this part of the hunt.

Almost immediately, Seneca barked aggressively and jumped towards the caribou, forcing it to awkwardly sidestep while running. The interruption in the cadence of the bull’s steps slowed it down and allowed Djinn to run up next to him and start biting at the stomach and legs. In their pursuit they had run to the banks of a river, forcing the bull to choose between crossing the wide river wounded or face his pursuers. He turned to face the tokotas, gnarled antlers lowered to the ground and poised to fight. Seneca and Djinn instinctively took the challenge and squared themselves off with snarling and raised hackles. Lee and Laura exchanged a quick glance before deftly jumping off their tokotas, silently agreeing it would be better for them to let the beasts have the freedom to move without a handler. The elder bull grunted and charged at Djinn.

Immediately Djinn moved to go for the caribou’s throat, but was thwarted by a close call with a swipe from the large antlers. He parried with the caribou, waiting for it to falter and give him the chance to get to its throat. Meanwhile Seneca was going for the side of the caribou, jumping at its stomach and its legs, trying to get it to fall. She managed to evade it's kicking for a while, but eventually took a hoof to the face. She howled in pain and backed off momentarily, tail forced between her legs. Laura almost went to the tokota, but Lee stopped her and convinced her to wait a little longer before pulling the tokota out of the fight. Both handlers watched with bated breath as the caribou lunged forward at Djinn and just as it did, Seneca managed to bite hard at its front leg. The bull snorted and lost its balance in its momentum. It tipped violently forward and crashed to the ground, it's antlers digging into the soft tundra. As soon as it hit the ground both tokotas lunged at it and the fight was quickly over. Laura ran to meet Seneca and was greeted happily by the tokota and her bloodied muzzle. Laura pushed her face away gingerly to keep the blood away and looked to Lee. “There's one down!” she announced with a smile.

{Layla}

Luke, Yutalie, Cole, and Sivu were in a similar battle, the caribou had been herded into a tight group and at least one of them had already tripped and been trampled by his own. Sivu despite her earlier goofy attitude had become very focused and took cues from not just Yutalie but from her own instincts which had resulted in a still running buck but he was also bleeding from a nasty bite to his haunches. Yue and Luke let the dun take another snap at the male caribou before the gold tundra sunk her fangs into his shoulder yanking him to a stop and Sivu with half a stride made took a crushing hold on it’s spine. The vertebrae crunched in the females mouth, it’s dying groan lost in the pounding of hooves from the herd still galloping away. “Let’s go for another.” Luke called to Cole over the din who nodded in agreement.

Yue was thrilled to give chase once more, her body falling into a rhythm with Sivu as they bounded after the herd once again. Lee and Laura also seemed to have a similar idea as Cole spotted them going into an all out sprint to catch up and bring down another animal. Yutalie bayed at the caribou pushing in from the side, Sivu followed her lead and let out a loud howl then snapped her teeth clicking on air as the female shied away shoving others out of her way. Like collies with errant sheep the tokos forced the caribou into turning around back the way they came. One tried to make a break for it by breaking from the main group in a blind panic but the doe was soon pounced upon by Sivu and Cole. “Good girl.” He praised looking up for Luke as he and his tundra were locked in a duel with another bull.

This wasn’t an elder or one of the sick but this bull had rammed into Yutalie’s side and nearly knocked Yue over and almost unseated Luke with the force of the hit. As it was Luke jeans were stained red at the knee with his own blood since the caribou’s antlers had struck him there. Hissing at the pain Luke pressed one hand against his wound while the other desperately hung on to his girls mane. Incensed at losing focus long enough to have been attacked by prey, but also to have her handler hurt as a result Yutalie bellowed her rage at the bull. He trumpeted back and squared off like he was facing a challenger for mates during the breeding season. Yellow eyes and white teeth flashed in the afternoon light as Yue charged like a bear, though at the last second she skidded to let Sivu surprise and bodyslam the bull knocking him into a roll. Snarling the two females were on him tearing into flesh and painting their muzzles red, but Sivu knew to let the still royally pissed off tundra have the killing blow.

Luke had clung like a burr to her fur, red fingers clutching the blonde mane until the fight was done. “You okay?” Cole asked standing in his stirrups to try and get a look over Yue’s back.

“I’m not sure. I don’t think it’s bad but, uh, pretty sure that was the last one she’s taking down with me still on her.” The sandy haired man joked shooting a crooked grin to Cole who chuckled back. “Wonder how the girls are doing?” He asked aloud looking for his sister and her friend.

{Scorpio}

“Well, should we go for one more?” Lee asked after looking over Djinn for injury. Laura bit her lip and looked over at Seneca. The tawny halfmane was only this happy when she was hunting and right now she was full of adrenaline. Her ears were perked as she watched the caribou herd continue to move with eager eyes. Laura sighed, knowing she couldn’t make Seneca stop until they had one more in the bag. “Alright. Yes, let's go for another. I’ll have Seneca cut into the herd and flush out some fresh ones. Take your pick and we’ll back you up.” Lee agreed and the two quickly mounted their tokotas, Laura urging Seneca forward and taking the lead.

Once they got near the herd Seneca sprinted at them taking the caribou on the outside by surprise and breaking through the defensive line towards the middle of the herd. Laura laid against Seneca’s neck to avoid getting hit by the caribou as the tokota nipped at ankles around them. The caribou were quickly stirred up into a frenzy and all Laura could see was a sea of brown fur. Then suddenly they broke out of the herd and were chasing a few caribou to the side of the herd. Seneca was between the “mother herd” as Laura began to think of it and the few caribou that broke off, quickly driving a wedge between the two so her and Djinn would be able to get another caribou.

The caribou next to them were running hard, kicking up bits of tundra as they went. Seneca was being driven crazy by the loud, desperate breaths and grunts of the caribou. She pushed the small group farther away from the herd until she saw Djinn deftly cut one large female away from her fellow caribou. Seneca was reluctant to let the rest go, but she focused her attention on the single animal as the rest raced back to the herd. Djinn jumped on the hindquarters of the caribou and sunk his teeth into its haunches while Lee tried to hang onto the tokota. Seneca raced towards the caribou’s head as Laura’s eyes widened. She started to yell for Seneca to stop but the sentence never came. Instead the caribou swept its antlers towards them in anger, which Seneca managed to evade. Laura however wasn’t so lucky. She made eye contact with the wide, red eyes of the utterly pissed off caribou just as its antlers connected with her chest and threw her off Seneca. Laura landed on the tundra with enough force to knock the wind out of her and blur the edges of her vision. All she could do was stare up at the overcast sky and try to remember how to breathe. Laura could hear all the sounds of the hunt for a while. Tokotas snarled and snapped their teeth, Lee shouted something, and the caribou snorted and grunted angrily. Soon the snorts turned into wheezes which were quickly drowned out by a flurry of activity and then silence. Laura knew the hunt was over and it only took a minute before Seneca came up to her to make sure her handler was alright. Laura was too dazed to wipe off the blood that dripped onto her face from Seneca’s muzzle until Djinn also came to investigate.

Slowly Laura pushed herself up into a sitting position and checked herself over. She was pretty sure she had a broken rib on her right side but she felt lucky that it wasn’t any worse. Lee suddenly ran over, asking if Laura was okay. “I’m fine. I think… Where are the boys?”

{Layla}

“I don’t know…”

Lee looked around searching for her brother and Cole, she didn’t immediately spot them but knew they couldn’t be far. Hearing her friend hiss in pain she gently eased Seneca away and got in close to check on Laura. “Are you sure you’re okay? You went down pretty hard.”

Lee was about to slide her hand around her waist to help her stand when Laura gripped her tight. The harsh grimace pinched her features and Leanna knew that she had to of cracked or broken a rib or two. Remembering her own encounter with some moose antlers Lee sympathized with the pain. “I guess that answers that question.” Djinn bumped his bloody muzzle into her back as she knelt by Laura.

Turning she caught two sets of curious blue and yellow eyes blinking at her, Pilot popped down from Djinn’s back and sniffed at Laura. For a few minutes the cat wasn’t an asshole and managed to purr and rub his obnoxious head against the woman’s legs in a show of comfort. Squinting at the traitor she bit back a growl, since when did he show affection to anyone other than his toko? “There you two are, what happened? Is Laura okay?” Cole asked as Sivu and Yutalie trotted up just as bloodied and a little bruised.

“Antlers caught her in the chest, think she might of broken a rib or two in the fall off Seneca.” Lee explained glancing up at the two men.

Cole immediately dropped off his tawny and rushed to Laura’s side, the worry very evident in his face. Huh, wonder how I missed that... A one sided smirk tilted the corner of her mouth as Cole looked after Laura.

Pilot brushed against her knee once before leaving to go back to Djinn and Seneca who were sniffing around the female caribou. “Don’t even, we need those pelts guys which means you can’t eat ‘em just yet.” Luke called from his perch on Yue.

Narrowing her eyes she wondered why he hadn’t got done with Cole, then she spotted the bright splash of crimson on his leg where it didn’t belong. “You too huh?”

Luke looked down and winced. “Yeah, nothing broken just hurts like a bitch.”

Getting closer she rolled up his pant leg and flinched. “I can see why, got you good didn’t they. I think I got some alcohol wipes and bandages in my bag.” Whistling all three loose tokos came over thinking it was them who had been called.

Sivu shoved her face in Lee’s and offered sloppy pink hued kisses. “Gah none of that! At least not until you’re cleaned off.”

“Sivu, Seneca c’mere girls.” Cole called as he helped ease Laura back to her feet.

Poor girl would be sore for awhile, but it was a risk they all took with Tokota’s and hunting up close. Grabbing the saddle bag off Djinn Leanna tossed Cole a AID wrap to help with Laura’s ribs and went cleaning the gash on Luke’s leg and wrapping it with a layer or two of gauze. “Better?”

He stretched it a few times testing the flexibility and his pain ratio before nodding. “Better, now let’s got get our prizes.”
